What Is Al-Anon?

“The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope, in order to solve their common problems.”

We believe that alcoholism is a family disease and that changed attitudes can aid in recovery.

Al-Anon is a world-wide fellowship. It is for anyone whose life has been affected by someone else’s drinking.

Alateen is part of the Al-Anon Family Group and is for young people (under the age of 20) whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking.

We who live, or have lived, with the problem of alcoholism understand as perhaps few others can. We, too, were lonely and frustrated, but in Al-Anon we discover that no situation is really hopeless and that it is possible for us to find contentment, and even happiness, whether the alcoholic is still drinking or not.

We urge you to try our program. It has helped many of us find solutions that lead to serenity. So much depends on our own attitudes, and as we learn to place our problem in its true perspective, we find it loses its power to dominate our thoughts and our lives.

      Hi,
I am interested in attending an Alanon meeting in Kalamazoo. Looking at the scheduled, above, they are all closed. Are there any open groups currently?
      Lissa

    2. Robin says:

Lissa, that means that the meetings are for those who want to attend Al-Anon meetings, and those particular meetings are closed to AA members.

    3. Jackie says:

Does Al Anon hold open meeting in which AA members can attend?

    4. RJ says:

Jackie: Al-Anon by definition, is for friends and families of problem drinkers. I would think that an AA member probably has friends and/or family members who may fit that definition.

    5. Kathi says:

Jackie: Generally, Al-Anon meetings are closed, in that only those who are members of Al-Anon, or those looking to become members, can attend. There are many members of AA who have also joined Al-Anon, as they realize that they too have been affected by someone else’s drinking! Also, Al-Anon does hold special “open” events in which AA members can attend, such as Open Talks or joint conferences. Take care.

Looking for a meeting in Flushing, Michigan

    7. Yup, you are correct.

    8. Lynnea Harding says:

      Hi Melissa!

There is a meeting in Flushing Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:00 PM. It is held at St. Robert School at 214 E. Henry Street in Flushing. If you enter off Henry Street, then go left, it is in the last room on the left (Room #8).

      Hope this helps!

    12. Lynn Lozon says:

Live in Algonac 48028. Any meetings?

    13. Becky says:

      Lynn,

There is a good meeting in Richmond on Mondays at 8:00 pm at St. Augustine church it’s only a 1/2 hr. from Algonac. There is one in Algonac at Trinity United Methodist Church on Friday at 8:30 pm but I have never been to that meeting so can’t speak to what it’s like

    14. Lucy says:

I think the designation “closed” could keep newcomers away. They might think that those are private meetings or that there are currently too many members attending or whatever. Perhaps you could post an explanation, above the schedule, of what is meant by “closed” and “open.”
